What I Learned from a $1 Ornament: Part Two

This post is a follow-up from an earlier blog. If you haven’t read that one, please go here to check it out…or ignore me and don’t get the background context. Who am I to stomp on your free will?

I moved it. The spinning ornament, I moved it from where it hung. Well, to be more specific, I hit it (as I usually do) and it fell. Then, I rehung it where it was, but ended up knocking it down once again. Strangest part about that is the fact that I have bumped into it countless times before and it never fell. But the two times I bumped into it after my last revelation, it came tumbling down. So after the second time, I picked it up and hung it from my window without taking a second thought.

Yeah I know. If I had followed what I said in the last blog, the ornament would no longer be hanging in my room. But for some reason I didn’t move it and after it fell I didn’t even think to put it in a better place, in the right place. Instead I just moved it to a place where it will continue to not do what it was made for. (And more tragically, now it will have an even harder chance at doing its job, even with my help). But there it has hung since I moved it.

You’re probably wondering why I’m bringing this up again. Other than the fact that I haven’t followed through on what I learned, it would seem that something else is new. It would seem that this piece of decoration (with the Holy Spirit’s wisdom inside of me) is still teaching me some things.

It attracted my eye today when I opened the blinds and the sun shone off of its shiny material. I caught myself staring at it…again. It was almost as if it spoke to me and asked, “Kyndra, why haven’t you moved me to where I belong? I’m still in the wrong environment.” Yes, little decoration, you are. And I confess my reason for this: I don’t particularly know where I should put it. I don’t know where it would best fit. And, of course, it certainly doesn’t know.

Then I started thinking about myself and how I too had not moved from the wrong environment, how I still wasn’t using my potential energy. Why? Because I know about as much about my destination as I know about that ornament’s. Furthermore, I don’t know how I’m meant to get there.  I’m clueless about where I’m supposed to go and my means of getting there, so I have continued to sit here in the environment that isn’t conducive to me fulfilling my purpose.

But it’s different with the ornament. Yeah, I don’t know where it’s supposed to go, but I do know how it will get there. I know its means of transportation. Me. I’m the one. I will be the one who picks it up and moves it to where it needs to be , so it needn’t worry how it’s going to get there, nor where it’s going to go. All it has to do it fulfill its purpose once it gets there.

Shall we bring this metaphor back down to earth? In the same way that that ornament will find the right environment through the power of a greater force outside of itself, I too will make my way to my right environment, my right destination, through the power of a force much greater than my own, the power of my Father God, the creator of all things. So I too need not worry about where I am supposed to go or how I’m supposed to get there. My job is simply to focus on doing what I was purposed to do when I get there.

And I know what you’re thinking: Kyndra, what does one do in the meantime, while waiting for the Mighty Mover to make moves in their life? It’s actually quite simple. I once read that “[God] will develop your character to match your assignment” (Experiencing God, page 46). This means while we walk along our paths waiting for the big assignment that God has predestined for us, while we wait for our right environment, God is developing us into the individuals he wants us to be, so that when we do reach that major point in our lives, we will be ready. In the meantime, God may put you or I in charge a few things so that we may be faithful and learn. Then we will be ready for the big things (Matthew 25:21).  [I encourage you to go through the bible study, Experiencing God if you want some insight on doing God’s will. That study was such a blessing to me.]

And if this is not sufficient to-dos for your in-between time, check out Micah 6:8. It clearly tells us what God expects from us: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” That may seem simple, but I promise if you focus on doing those things, you’ll end up in your right environment, at your right destination, in the place where you can fulfill you purpose before you know it!
